  • Canberra, the capital city of Australia, is located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), about 280 km southwest of Sydney and 660 km northeast of Melbourne. It is a planned city designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin, featuring wide avenues, large green spaces, and a layout centered around Lake Burley Griffin.

Canberra is situated within a valley, surrounded by rolling hills and the Brindabella Ranges. The region has a dry, temperate climate with hot summers, cold winters, and occasional snowfall in surrounding areas.

The area has been inhabited by Indigenous Australians, specifically the Ngunnawal people, for at least 21,000 years. The region was an important meeting place for different Aboriginal groups.

European settlers arrived in the 1820s, establishing farms and pastoral operations.

The city was designed by Walter Burley Griffin after an international design competition. Construction began in 1913, and Parliament House was officially opened in 1927, marking Canberra’s establishment as the seat of government.

Canberra has grown significantly since World War II, becoming a center for politics, education, and culture. It hosts major institutions like the Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, and Australian National University (ANU).

Today, Canberra is known for its high standard of living, strong public sector employment, and role as the political heart of Australia.
